As fantastic as the iPod nano appears to be, my only question is why Apple has abandoned the mini (supposedly the best-selling iPod) and, more importantly, why there is again not a single iPod in the lineup that doesn’t become irreparably scratched when used. When the mini came out, I thought Apple had learnt the lesson that shiny metal and plastic looks great for about a day. Thanks to its anodized exterior, my iPod mini is the only iPod I own that has kept its good looks. I’m pretty certain the nano won’t be as robust.

I kinda think they should market the nano as “Trade your color casing for color screen.” I will definitely miss those lovely green and pink iPod Minis…. *salute*
I think they replaced the mini because it used a regular hard drive while the new Nano uses a solid state Flash drive like the Shuffle, thus no skipping, faster access and longer battery life being the benefits. You can’t introduce the Nano “and” keep around a direct competitor like the mini.
However, they could have just updated the mini to use Flash drives instead of platter drives, but then there’d be no new toy to market – just an upgrade, which is much harder to “sell”
Agree with your comments about scratching though. I think the all plastic Shuffle is not bad or the mini’s case.
I agree completly with your comment on the scratching. Although the metal does look cooler, you have to by a case for the nano when you actually by the player, if you want it to retain any form of a clean casing. I do like those new cases they have for it, though. At last, a funky case that actually provides protection, unlike those “socks”.
My mini is scratched up pretty badly, and I’ve only had it for half a year.
…that will teach me to fall off my bike….
I’ve had my 40GB iPod Photo for bout a year now and it still looks like new. Just needed to invest in an iSkin and no scratches at all.
Those nano tubes look like apple learnt they’re lesson.
bought one same day. love it. moving forward, never backward.
As weird as this will sound, I kinda like that the back scratches over time. The scratches are like a badge that shows it’s *your* iPod and gives it a kind of nice lived in look, like your favourite pair of shoes.
An iPod isn’t a pair of shoes, but it’s something that’s personal to you (it’s got *your* music on it), it’s something you’re likely to use at least every other day, and it’s likely something you keep it in your pocket. Why shouldn’t the back of it reflect the way you live your life?
This might sound totally silly, but I think apple might have made it easy to scratch on purpose – to create a market for a bajillion different cases?
I have just arranged for Apple to take my 4gig black nano back in exchange for a white one. I just cannot accept how easily this device scratches – just by wiping with a cotton cloth.
It is possible Apple have designed in a certain ‘scratch sensitivity’ to bolster third party sales of skins and cases but I don’t believe it myself, after all I can return it within two weeks for a full refund, which is what I will do if the white one scratches as easily as the black model. I suspect it won’t because I will make damn sure I put it in a vacuum sealed display case!
Apple could easily make this thing scratch resitant and it would then be the most amazing mp3 player. It is a brilliant design but the scratches just spoil a beautiful product.
this little piece of art
been taking care of it for 2 months
but still it get damaged to easily…
thinking of selling mine away and buy another ones this time with the help of iskin!
on second thought i will try for refund
take back some of my words its not 2 months but 2 weeks! lol
You were right about the scratches — way to be prescient.
Amen. I’ve an iPod Nano for two days and it is scratched badly already.
It is a dream-machine, though. So small and so light, and yet so powerful!
i have had mine for 1 week and it is already broken
I agree, but, really its just too cool to resist! (Although, I will since I already have an iPod) ;-P
