WordPress… sigh

As I said in my first post, I’m new to blogging and blogging software. This ignorance led me to delete all pending comments in WordPress a minute ago, instead of approving them as I thought I was doing (comments are moderated because I seem to suffer from bad comment-spam even though I just opened this blog). I pressed the wrong button, apparently. So, if your comment is missing in action, it’s not intentional, it’s just been consumed by the evil that is bad interface design.

That aside, WordPress is pretty funky.

When I try to download the newest version, v0.91 I think? – It denies me. It stops after downloading 8.2 KB (says of 405 KB – don’t know if that’s correct). As an error it says – “Cannot create file”. I’m using Safari. Any help?

I am partial to Drupal myself, but that is mostly because I am one of the developers, and it’s what I do for a living =)

I’d try out MovableType, it’s what John Gruber uses over at daringfireball.net and he has an amazing site. He also has some great plugins to use with MT. Give it a try.

To avoid comment spam, I’d recommend installing the AuthImage plugin. That provides an image that contains an obscured passcode that users need to type in to post comments. I’ve installed it on my blog, and I’ve not received a single comment spam since.

If you’ll use MovableType, try MTBlacklist too. Every comment is sent to you via email and it will allow you to either delete, add embedded urls to the blacklist, and approve comments. So far, it has helped me a lot in dealing with comment spam.

If you don’t want to use a captcha plugin like AuthImage, try out Spam Karma or Spaminator to filter out your spam comments. These have worked very well for me in my blog (Spam Karma, in particular) and have meant I now no longer need to moderate my comments!

I’m about ready to take the NewsFire plunge! Great app! I just wondered … what solution did you end up utilizing for your WordPress spam?
